Wooly WIPs

Here is my latest pup...a little Bichon. I like working on dogs, especially commissioned ones, because there is always a new challenge. For instance, I originally had made this little one in a very soft core fiber blend, but I just couldn't get it to look 'right'. It was a texture problem.

I ordered some Leiscester and Wendslydale locks, which, once deconstructed, worked perfectly for the Bichon's external layer. Much more realistic. I still need to clean up the loose fibers and add the long, straight hairs to the tail.

I have been getting lots of dog orders for Christmas. I still have another Bichon, a schnoodle, a pug, a daschund and some cockers to put together. Luckily, I haven't had too many 'repeat breed' orders, so each experience has something new to teach me.

Yes, I KNOW that doing the same dog over and over would make it 'easier'. But problem solving is half of the fun of creating, don't you think?

Now here is the catch...I keep hearing that I need to focus on ONE style in order to have product recognition. My response is WAHHHHHHHH!

My wool style is very different from my clay sculpting style which looks nothing like my fabric style.

And, no, I can't seem to give up the other mediums to focus on just one. Each thing I do fulfills a different craving for me.

What's a gal to do?

Well, I'm off to finish up some more holiday paperclay. Then I have out the sewing machine to make some teeny, tiny replica dolls a la Walker. I may even add clay to the cloth dolls!

Hey! If I add wool hair, all my passions can be in one place! Woot!

Until next time, happy dabbling!

The Paperclay Song

(Sung to the tune of 'Oh, Christmas Tree')

Oh Paperclay

Oh paperclay
Oh paperclay

How love-ly is thy tex-ture.

Oh paperclay
Oh paperclay

How love-ly is they tex-ture.

Eas-i-er with which to play
Than oven baked pol-y-mer clay

Oh paperclay
Oh paperclay

How love-ly is thy tex-ture.

It is destined to be a holiday hit. NOT.

And yes, Virginia, I AM that big of a geek!

As you can clearly see, I have shifted seasons mentally, though it will probably take a week to get all of the Halloween goodies back where they belong.

Maybe two.
Until next time, happy variety!

DON'T sell? Huh?

My husband, who usually doesn't care WHAT I do with the things I make, has requested that I not sell this item. Once I recovered from my shock, I agreed.

A mild bit of a bummer, though, since I am pretty sure it would have been a fairly quick sell.
I guess it would be nice not to sell everything, since I am sure my great-great-great grandchildren would like to know what a weird-o I am.

They will probably pass this around at birthdays and Christmas and such as a 'gag' gift. As in, "I have the bird-riding Santa and I am going to pass it off to Joe for his 40th. I think he totally forgot about it."

At least I'll be remembered, right?

Thanks for popping by! Until next time, happy bird riding Santas and other weird stuff.

What Was My Muse Thinking?

This is what I mean about the flighty, easily distracted muse. I have doll heads. Many doll heads, in fact.

Having doll heads isn't a bad thing, in and of itself. A little wacky, perhaps, but not bad by any means. But one can't help but wonder what purpose they serve. They are, after all, just heads.

Shall I place them in a box in the garage to be found at a much later date? Do I leave them in strategic places to freak people out?

Not one of these has a body idea to go with it. Not one. I am beginning to realize that I have serious issues with over-thinking things.

Even when I manage to generate good and well fleshed out ideas, it takes me forever to finish things because I am afraid to overwork things. (I have had the "just get it done" fever backfire on me many, MANY times.)

I thought this guy was done. Ugh! I can't stand it. I am going to have to drill out a nose hole and put in a turnip or radish nose. His face is too flat. I need to carve out the mouth area and really get rid of those blackened teeth. I can't stand the shiny finish either, so it is time to break out the steel wool. Once he is dressed with a hat, I think he will be OK. Or maybe he should just visit the circular file. We'll see how frustrated I get.

This was a last minute "Oh, I have some clay left and some wire. Let's just throw something on and see what happens."

It may end up well. Or not.

Pretty quirky, but it leaves a lot of different opportunities to 'finish' it.

Here is leftover clay guy #2. He looks a bit like a pupa, I think. He has holes in his head for the insertion of horns. With a bit of paint, he may be cool. Or maybe not.

My goal for next year is to finish projects in a more timely manner. Baba Yaga's house is coming along, but I am so afraid that it will become overworked that I am working in slow motion.
Ack!
What you do think? Any comments or advice would be welcomed!
Until next time, finish, finish, finish!

Feeling Very Halloweenish

I am finishing elf clothes, tidying Baba Yaga's house and now I have brought out the paperclay. I have a yen to make some pumpkin heads with BIG old teeth.

This may be why I never get anything completely done. My muse has ADD.

Until next time, happy anything and everything!

PS Did I mention that I won the coolest wee crabbie? Denise Baldwin at oddimagination.blogspot.com is sending him my way and I am SO EXCITED! Thanks Denise!
